Hello Kitty: The Iconic Sensation

Hello Kitty

Hello Kitty a.k.a. Kitty White

If you were a child of the 80s, or raised a child in the 80s, no doubt Hello Kitty has crossed your path several times.

Hello Kitty was made in 1974 by a Japanese company called Sanrio and first appeared on a coin purse. By the mid 1980s, Hello Kitty, with her round face, black eyes, yellow nose, and no mouth, had become famous worldwide, with products geared toward young girls.

Students couldn’t help but notice the decorated pens, pencils, and paper brought to school by these girls to add a little bit of flair into the classroom. During the 1990s, stores were popping up in shopping malls that sold a much wider variety of items, including personal care products

Hello Kitty’s name is actually Kitty White. According to the Sanrio, Hello Kitty was born in the suburbs of London. She lives with her parents and her twin sister Mimmy who is her best friend. Her hobbies include baking cookies and making new friends. As she always says, “you can never have too many friends!”

Even today, her iconic face appears on merchandise far beyond school supplies, and includes items like clothing, lanyards and key chains, bags and purses, auto accessories, and much more!
